An investment account, such as a brokerage account, changes value all the time. In M2, you don't record each dividend, fee, or price change. Once per statement, you record one adjustment on the account and the same adjustment on its fund. It stays off the Profit and Loss Report. A CD that earns interest works the same way.
Before you start
- Set up the investment account and its fund first. See How to Start Using Multiple Bank Accounts.
- You need financial write access for your local (the individual unit of your organization, such as a chapter or local committee).
- Record every regular draw for the statement period first, as shown below. A draw you record later would be counted twice.
Record the value change
- On your local's dashboard, click the Income & Expenses tab.
- In the Bank Accounts card, click the investment account.
- In the ledger, find the Balance on the last row dated on or before the statement date.
- Subtract that from the statement's total account value. The result covers earnings, fees, and value changes together.
- Click Record Adjustment. Enter the statement date in Date and the result in Amount, with a minus sign first if the statement is lower than M2. In Memo, type something like "Value change per statement of September 30, 2026." Click Save.
- Back on the Income & Expenses tab, click the account's fund in the Funds card, such as Investment Fund.
- Click Record Adjustment, enter the same date, amount, and memo, and click Save.
The account now matches its statement, and Fund Reconciliation stays at zero. In the ledger, an adjustment with a minus sign shows in the Disbursement column.
Regular draws
When the account pays your local a regular draw (some locals call it a stipend), record two transfers with the same date, amount, and memo:
- A bank account transfer from the investment account to your Operating Account. Use Record Bank Account Transfer in the Bank Accounts card menu.
- A fund transfer from the investment account's fund to the fund the money is for, usually General Fund. Use Record Fund Transfer in the Funds card menu.
Neither one appears on the Profit and Loss Report.
Show earnings as income (optional)
If your local wants investment earnings on the Profit and Loss Report, record them as a payment first:
- On the Income & Expenses tab, click Add Non Member Payment (or click Financials, then Non-Member Payments). Click Add Payment.
- Record the earnings to an income Account such as "Investment Income," with Fund set to the investment account's fund. Click Post. See Record a Member or Non-Member Payment.
- On your local's dashboard, click the Untransferred Funds tab. Click the green plus icon (Cash To Treasurer) in the header. The Officer Funds Transfer window opens with every waiting payment checked.
- Uncheck every payment except the earnings. The box at the top of the list stays checked.
- Set the Date, choose the investment account in Bank Account, and click Transfer.
Then record the value change as usual. It now covers only what's left.
Troubleshooting
The adjustment won't save. If the message starts "Date cannot be on or before," the statement date is on or before the account's or fund's starting balance date. That value is already in the starting balance. Start with the next statement.
Fund Reconciliation shows a difference. One of the two adjustments is missing, or the amounts don't match. Compare the adjustments in the account's ledger and the fund's ledger.
The value change looks too large. Check that every draw for the period is recorded. A missing draw ends up inside the adjustment.
