14 - How to Delete a Post

Need to remove a post you created? This guide shows you how to delete posts on Connect.

Before You Delete

Consider:

• Can you edit the post instead of deleting it?
• Have people already commented on it?
• Is there important information others might need?
• Do you just need to change privacy settings?

When to edit instead:

• Minor typos or mistakes
• Need to add information
• Wrong privacy setting

When to delete:

• Posted in completely wrong place
• Information is incorrect and shouldn’t be seen
• Content is inappropriate
• Post is no longer relevant
• You posted duplicate content

Steps to Delete a Post

Step 1: Find the Post

Option 1: From the Feed

1. Scroll through the feed where you posted
2. Find your post

Option 2: From Your Profile

1. Click your name or profile picture (top right)
2. Click “My Posts” or “Activity”
3. Find the post

Step 2: Open the Post Menu

Look for:

• Three dots (…) in corner of post
• Trash can icon
• “Options” button
• Down arrow menu

Click to open the menu.

Step 3: Click “Delete” or “Delete Post”

From the menu:

1. Click “Delete” or “Delete Post”
2. A confirmation window will appear

Step 4: Confirm Deletion

Read the confirmation message:

• “Are you sure you want to delete this post?”
• “This action cannot be undone”
• “Comments will also be deleted”

To proceed:

• Click “Delete,” “Yes,” or “Confirm”

To cancel:

• Click “Cancel” or “No”
• Post will not be deleted

Step 5: Wait for Confirmation

• You’ll see a success message
• The post will disappear from the feed
• You’ll be returned to the feed or previous page

What Gets Deleted

When you delete a post:

Removed:

• The post text
• Photos in the post
• All comments on the post
• All likes on the post
• The post from all locations it appeared

Not removed:

• Copies if someone took screenshots
• Shares of your post (but may show “[Post deleted]”)
• Notifications already sent about the post

After Deleting

Verify Deletion

1. Go to where the post was
2. Make sure it’s no longer visible
3. Check your profile’s “My Posts” to confirm removal

If You Change Your Mind

Unfortunately:

• Deleted posts usually cannot be recovered
• You’ll need to create a new post with the same content
• Any comments and likes are gone forever

Best practice: Be certain before deleting!

Who Can Delete Posts

Your Own Posts

• You can always delete your own posts
• Some systems may have a time limit

Other People’s Posts

Regular members: Cannot delete others’ posts

Moderators and Officers: May be able to delete any post

• Used to remove inappropriate content
• Used to clean up spam
• Should be used responsibly

Deleting vs. Hiding

Some systems offer “Hide” instead of or in addition to “Delete”:

Hide

• Post is hidden from feed
• Only you and moderators can see it
• Can be unhidden later
• Comments and likes preserved

Delete

• Post is permanently removed
• Cannot be recovered
• Comments and likes are lost

If available, hide might be safer than delete.

Special Situations

Post with Many Comments

If your post has a lot of discussion:

• Consider leaving it even if you want to remove it
• Others may have valuable comments
• Consider editing to add a correction instead

If you must delete:

• You’re removing others’ comments too
• Consider warning commenters first

Shared Posts

If others shared your post:

• Deleting your original may break their shares
• Their share may show “[Post deleted]”
• Consider the impact before deleting

Announcements

If you posted an official announcement:

• Check with officers before deleting
• Others may have missed it
• May need to post a correction instead

Time-Sensitive Posts

For event reminders or time-sensitive info:

• May be fine to delete after the event passes
• Or leave it for historical record

Troubleshooting

Can’t Find Delete Option

Problem: No Delete option on your post.

Possible reasons:

• Time limit for deletion has passed
• You don’t have delete permissions
• System doesn’t allow post deletion
• You’re viewing someone else’s post

Solutions:

1. Make sure it’s YOUR post
2. Look in three dots (…) menu
3. Contact a moderator if you need help
4. Edit the post to remove content if you can’t delete

Delete Button Doesn’t Work

Problem: You click Delete but nothing happens.

Solutions:

1. Try refreshing the page
2. Try a different browser
3. Make sure you confirmed the deletion
4. Check for error messages
5. Contact webmaster

Post Reappears After Deletion

Problem: You deleted a post but it comes back.

Possible causes:

• Page wasn’t refreshed
• Browser cache showing old version
• System error

Solutions:

1. Refresh the page (F5)
2. Clear browser cache
3. Log out and back in
4. Try deleting again
5. Contact webmaster if it persists

Accidentally Deleted Wrong Post

Problem: You deleted the wrong post by mistake.

Solutions:

1. If just deleted, check if there’s an “Undo” option
2. Most systems don’t allow undo - post is gone
3. Recreate the post if possible
4. Contact webmaster immediately - they may have backup
5. Apologize to commenters if their comments were lost

Want to Delete Old Posts in Bulk

Problem: You have many old posts to delete.

Solutions:

• Most systems require deleting one at a time
• Some may have bulk delete for moderators
• Contact webmaster about bulk deletion
• Consider if they really need to be deleted

Alternatives to Deleting

Sometimes better options exist:

Edit the Post

If there’s a problem but the post has value:

1. Edit to fix the issue
2. Add “EDIT:” note explaining change
3. Keep the discussion intact

Change Privacy Settings

If too many people can see it:

1. Edit the post
2. Change privacy to more restrictive
3. Fewer people will see it going forward

Hide the Post

If available:

1. Hide instead of delete
2. Post is removed from view
3. Can be unhidden if needed

Post a Correction

If information was wrong:

1. Leave original post
2. Create new post with correction
3. Or comment on original with correction

Archive Old Posts

If cleaning up old content:

• Some systems have archive feature
• Post is preserved but not in main feed
• Can be found if needed

Best Practices

Before Deleting

• Read the post one more time
• Consider editing instead
• Think about impact on comments
• Remember it’s permanent

When Deleting

• Delete promptly if content is inappropriate
• Don’t leave harmful content up while you decide
• Be decisive

After Deleting

• If it was important, post a correction
• If people commented, consider explaining why you deleted
• Learn from why you needed to delete

Avoid Needing to Delete

• Preview before posting
• Double-check information
• Choose right privacy level
• Think before you post

Privacy Note

Even after deletion:

• Members may have seen the post
• Screenshots may exist
• Email notifications were already sent
• Shared copies may persist

Never post something assuming you can just delete it later.
