11 - How to Edit a Post
Made a mistake in a post? Need to add more information? This guide shows you how to edit a post you’ve created.
What You Can Edit
You can edit:
- The text content of your post
- Photos in your post (add or remove)
- Privacy settings (who can see it)
- Comment settings
What You Cannot Edit
You usually cannot:
- Change who originally posted it
- Change the posting date/time
- Edit posts created by others (unless you’re a moderator)
Steps to Edit Your Post
Step 1: Find Your Post
Option 1: From the Feed
- Scroll through the feed where you posted
- Find your post
Option 2: From Your Profile
- Click your name or profile picture
- Click “My Posts” or “Activity”
- Find the post you want to edit
Step 2: Open the Edit Menu
Look for one of these:
- Three dots (…) in the corner of the post
- Pencil icon on the post
- “Edit” button below the post
Click to open the menu.
Step 3: Click “Edit Post” or “Edit”
From the menu, click “Edit” or “Edit Post”
The post will open in edit mode.
Step 4: Make Your Changes
Edit the Text
- Click in the text area
- Make your changes:
- Fix typos
- Add information
- Remove content
- Reword sentences
- Use formatting tools if needed (bold, italic, links)
Add or Remove Photos
To add photos:
- Click the camera icon or “Add Photo”
- Select photo from your computer
- Upload
To remove photos:
- Find the photo in the post
- Click the X or “Remove” button on the photo
- Confirm removal
Change Privacy Settings
- Find the privacy dropdown (globe, lock, or group icon)
- Click it
- Select new privacy level:
- Public
- Members Only
- Officers Only
- Specific groups
- The setting will update
Change Comment Settings
- Find comment settings
- Choose:
- Allow everyone to comment
- Only officers can comment
- Disable comments
Step 5: Preview Your Changes (Optional)
If available:
- Click “Preview”
- See how the edited post will look
- Click “Edit” again if you need more changes
Step 6: Save Your Changes
- Click “Save,” “Update,” or “Save Changes”
- Wait for confirmation message
- The post will update in the feed
Step 7: Verify Your Edit
- View the post in the feed
- Make sure your changes appear correctly
- Check that photos appear if you added them
- Edit again if needed
Common Editing Tasks
Fix a Typo
- Find your post
- Click Edit
- Click in text where typo is
- Correct the mistake
- Save
Quick tip: You can use Find (Ctrl+F) in the text box to locate the typo.
Add More Information
- Edit post
- Click at the end of existing text
- Press Enter for new line
- Type additional information
- Save
Example:
- Original: “Meeting Thursday at 7 PM”
- Add: “Meeting Thursday at 7 PM. Dinner will be served at 6 PM.”
Remove Sensitive Information
- Edit post
- Find and select the sensitive information
- Delete it
- Replace with generic text if needed
- Save
Example:
- Original: “Contact John at 555-1234”
- Change to: “Contact the secretary for more information”
Add a Photo You Forgot
- Edit post
- Click “Add Photo”
- Upload photo
- Save
Remove a Wrong Photo
- Edit post
- Find the incorrect photo
- Click X or Remove on that photo
- Save
Change Who Can See the Post
- Edit post
- Change privacy dropdown
- Save
Common reason: You posted as “Public” but meant “Members Only”
Edit History
Some systems show edit history:
- May show “Edited” tag on post
- May show what was changed
- May show when it was edited
Note: Members may see that you edited the post, even if they can’t see what changed.
When You Should Edit vs. Delete
Edit When:
- You have a small typo
- You need to add or clarify information
- You posted to right place but wrong privacy level
- You want to add a photo
Delete and Repost When:
- The entire post is wrong or inappropriate
- You posted in completely wrong group
- The information is no longer relevant
- You want to completely change the message
Time Limits on Editing
Some systems limit how long you can edit:
- May be able to edit for 24 hours after posting
- May be able to edit indefinitely
- Moderators can usually always edit
If you can’t edit:
- Check if too much time has passed
- You may need to delete and repost
- Contact a moderator for help
Editing Others’ Posts
Regular Members
You usually cannot edit posts created by others.
Moderators and Officers
If you’re a moderator:
- You may be able to edit any post
- Use this power responsibly
- Only edit to:
- Fix errors that member requested
- Remove inappropriate content
- Update official information
Best practice: Comment on the post asking the author to edit it themselves.
Troubleshooting
Can’t Find Edit Button
Problem: You don’t see how to edit your post.
Possible reasons:
- Too much time has passed since posting
- You don’t have edit permissions
- You’re viewing someone else’s post
Solutions:
- Make sure it’s YOUR post
- Look for three dots (…) or pencil icon
- Check if time limit has passed
- Contact moderator if you need to edit
Changes Won’t Save
Problem: You edit and save, but changes don’t appear.
Solutions:
- Make sure you clicked “Save” button
- Check for error messages
- Try refreshing the page
- Try editing again
- Try a different browser
Edit Button Disappeared
Problem: You edited before, but now can’t edit again.
Possible reason: Time limit for editing has passed
Solutions:
- Delete the post and create a new one
- Add a comment with the correction
- Contact a moderator for help
Photo Won’t Upload During Edit
Problem: Can’t add photo when editing post.
Solutions:
- Check file size (under 5 MB)
- Check file format (JPG, PNG, GIF)
- Try a different photo
- Save other changes first, then edit again to add photo
Best Practices for Editing
Edit Promptly
If you notice a mistake:
- Edit as soon as possible
- Members may have already seen the error
- Quick edits are less noticeable
Don’t Abuse Editing
Avoid:
- Completely changing the message after people commented
- Editing to make comments look out of context
- Constantly editing for minor changes
Consider Adding an Edit Note
For major changes, add a note:
- “EDIT: Added dinner time”
- “UPDATE: Location has changed”
Type this at the end of your edited post.
Be Transparent
If you made a significant change:
- Some systems mark posts as “Edited”
- Don’t try to hide that you edited
- If asked, explain what you changed
Need Help?
Contact your lodge secretary or webmaster if:
- You can’t edit a post you created
- Your edits won’t save
- You need to edit an old post beyond the time limit
- You accidentally deleted content and can’t get it back
