The search box in the top bar finds members as you type. Enter a name, member number, phone number, or email address. The same box also finds local groups, districts, and regions. This guide is for anyone who wants to open a record without going through the menus.
Find someone from the list
-
Click the search box in the middle of the top bar. You can also press the / key on any M2 screen to jump to it.
-
Type at least three characters, such as the start of a last name. After a short pause, a list opens under the box.
-
Click the row you want. You can also press the down arrow key to highlight a row, then press Enter.
M2 opens that member's record, or the page for that local group, district, or region.
To close the list without choosing anything, press the Esc key or click outside it. If you clicked outside, click in the box to bring the list back. If you pressed Esc, type another character.
What the list shows
| Part of the list | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Members | Up to eight members who match. Active members in your parent group come first. Each row shows the name, the member's status, and the local group underneath. If more than eight match, More appears next to the heading. |
| Locals | Up to five local groups that match by name, city, or number. A local group that is no longer active is faded and tagged Inactive. |
| Districts | Up to three districts, if your organization uses districts. |
| Regions | Up to three regions, if your organization uses regions. |
| See all results for | The last row. It opens the full results for what you typed. |
Some organizations use their own words for a few of these names.
If nothing matches, the list says No results.
See all the results
If the list already shows the person you need, you don't have to do this.
Enter opens a highlighted row in the list instead of running the full search. Resting your pointer on a row highlights it.
- Type your search words in the search box.
- On a phone, where the Search button is hidden, press Enter. Otherwise, click Search. You can also click the last row of the list, See all results for.
If only one person matches, M2 opens that member's record. Otherwise the Search Results screen opens.
The Search Results screen
The screen sorts the people it finds into tabs. A tab appears only when someone matches, and each tab shows a count.
| Tab | Who is on it |
|---|---|
| My Local | People who belong to your local group. This tab appears only when you're in a local group role. |
| Global Active | Active members from across your organization. |
| Global Inactive | Members who aren't active and aren't deceased. |
| Global Deceased | Members who are deceased. |
In My Local and Global Active, each person shows a name you can click, their status, their member type, and their local groups. The Home, Cell, and Email buttons use the numbers and address on the record. A button is grayed out when the record has none. The other two tabs list each person's name and local groups.
Each tab shows at most 200 people. If a tab reaches 200, it shows Search Limit Reached Please Be More Specific in place of the list. Add another word to narrow the search.
If you don't see the person on the first tab, check Global Inactive and Global Deceased.
Search finds people across your organization. When you open a record, you see all of it only if your role has permission. Otherwise you see a shorter version.
Narrow your search
Each word you type has to match the beginning of something on the person's record, and every word has to match the same person. The order of the words doesn't matter. M2 ignores commas and one-letter words.
| What you type | What it finds | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A name | People whose first, middle, last, or preferred name matches. Names of one or two letters can't be found this way. | Smith or John Smith |
| A member number | The member with that number. | The number from the member's record |
| A phone number | Any phone number on the record. Type only digits, with no spaces or punctuation. | 5185551212 |
| An email address | Any email address on the record. | john@example.com |
For example, typing 5551212 finds phone numbers that begin with 5551212. It doesn't find 5185551212.
Add a keyword
A keyword is a word, a colon, and a value, with no space after the colon. Put quotation marks around a value that has more than one word.
| Keyword | What it finds | Example |
|---|---|---|
city: |
A city on the person's address. | city:Denver or city:"Colorado Springs" |
state: |
The state's abbreviation on the person's address. | state:NY |
zip: or postal_code: |
A ZIP or postal code on the person's address. | zip:10010 |
local: |
Members whose primary or secondary membership is in that local group. Use the local group's number or the start of its name. | local:0087 or local:"Van Rensselaer" |
status: |
The member's status in your parent group. | status:active |
local_status: |
The member's status in a local group. | local_status:active |
Type a status the way your organization names it, in lowercase, with the _ character in place of each space. For example, status:failed_to_advance.
A keyword value also only has to match the beginning. Typing city:Den finds addresses in Denver.
You can combine words and keywords. Smith city:"New York" finds people named Smith with an address in New York. city:Denver status:active local:"Paul Revere" finds active members with a Denver address who belong to the local group named Paul Revere.
On a phone or a narrow window, the question mark isn't shown. On a wider screen, click the question mark icon to the right of the search box for more examples. The Search Help window opens.
A few examples in that window don't work. Use local: instead of chapter: or any other word for a local group. Leave the quotation marks off a first and last name. Type John Smith, not "John Smith". A phone number has to be typed from its first digit, so the 5551212 example finds only numbers that start with 5551212.
Good to know
After you run a full search, your words stay in the box on the screens that follow. Press the / key to select them, then type to replace them.
If you can't find someone
The list doesn't open
Type at least three characters, then pause. If the list still doesn't open, run the full search. On a phone, press Enter. Otherwise, click Search.
The list says Keep typing to see members
M2 shows this when a word you've typed is also the start of a keyword, such as cit or a name like Post. It also shows when your search uses only status:, local_status:, or state:, or when the lookup takes too long. On a phone, press Enter to see the full results. Otherwise, click Search.
The search says No results
Try these in order:
- Check the spelling, or search by last name only.
- Check your quotation marks and keywords against the Search Help corrections under Narrow your search, above.
- Check any phone number you typed against the phone number rule under Narrow your search, above.
The person has a very short name
Search by last name or member number instead. The name row of the table under Narrow your search, above, describes this limit.
