Best Practices for Editing
Edit Promptly
If you notice a mistake:
- Edit as soon as possible
- Others may have already read it
- Quick edits are less noticeable
Add an Edit Note for Major Changes
For significant edits, add a note:
- “EDIT: Corrected the time from 6 PM to 7 PM”
- “UPDATE: The event has been moved to Friday”
Type this at the end of your edited comment.
Don’t Abuse Editing
Avoid:
- Completely changing your message after people replied
- Editing to make replies look out of context
- Editing to hide mistakes inappropriately
- Editing to “win” an argument
Be Transparent
If you made a significant change:
- Acknowledge it in an edit note
- Don’t try to hide that you edited
- If asked, explain what you changed
Editing Others’ Comments (Moderators Only)
If you’re a moderator:
- You may be able to edit anyone’s comments
- Use this power very sparingly
- Better to ask them to edit it themselves
- Only edit to:
- Remove inappropriate content
- Fix technical issues
- Correct official information
Document why you edited: Add moderator note.
